Ever find yourself repeating in your head "Control the Controllable" or "Its all about the details". Here is a great story I found on what can happen when a coach pays attention to even the tiniest detail.

Imagine this scenario....
A world where parents and coaches control a kid’s video game experience like we do his sports experience. Would kids want to play video games as much if we treated them like we treat youth sports?

I was asked about Team Tactics this week and the difference on using Concepts vs Systems. The use of Concepts in the Hockey world isn't a new thing but is an increasingly popular method for a teams tactical play.

I have had a few parents and coaches ask about my station practice plan I used with some of the Novice and Atom groups last week. Here is a link to the practice plan and a few tips on running a more effective station practice for Initiation/Novice/Atom.

For coaches who are like myself that only know goalies are supposed to stop the puck, here is a good blog I sometimes read to find some drills and the particular language that's needed to communicate with the player between the pipes.

Peewee/Atom/Novice/Initiation, Looking for practice plans and structure. Check out USA Hockey's ADM (American Development Model) they have some great practice plans and good station structure. Just click on your appropriate age group and take a look at some of the practice plans.

Initiation/Novice/Atom coaches looking for some unique ideas for station work? check out some of these stations from a Czech Novice Practice. What I find interesting is how they always have two players puck handling at the same time in their cone drills which helps build quick decision making and anticipation with the puck. Also I like how they always add a fake or deceptive move around cones or nets before attacking the net for a shot, simulating a game like situation.

I had a question last week about dynamic warm ups and cool downs for minor hockey. At the Peewee and Atom level the kids are ready and should be doing some sort of dynamic warmup. I know with limited space and the weather its difficult to get one in but there is enough room in the dressing room with bags pushed under the bench. Here is a great video by Gary Roberts for an easy dynamic warmup you can implement before game.
